Jaune. French for yellow. And not just any yellow — this yellow. Sunshine yellow. Taxi yellow. The yellow of a Parisian macaron counter, of a field of sunflowers in Provence, of the inside of a ripe mango, of joy itself distilled into a single, unapologetic, wall-to-wall colour statement.
Against this yellow, seven of the ocean's most extraordinary inhabitants have gathered for what can only be described as a party.
The tiger stripe nudibranch commands the centre — black and burnt orange, its dramatic markings so bold and graphic they look hand-designed, like something that escaped from a textile studio and ended up in the Pacific. Around it, two ruffled dorid nudibranchs spread their extraordinary brain-like folds in cream and rust, their edges crimped with a precision that would make a pastry chef weep with envy. A tiny orange dragon of a creature bristles with spikes in the lower left — one of nature's smallest and most ferocious-looking inhabitants, all attitude and texture in something barely larger than a thumbnail. Bottom right, a white bubble-textured nudibranch studded with orange-tipped cerata sits like a living piece of coral jewellery. And scattered between them all — hand-painted orange dots, the artist's own mark on the composition, a visual rhythm that ties the whole exuberant assembly together.
This is the painting where the Nudibranch series finds its most explicitly joyful register. Where Nudi Blue Crystal was cool and contemplative and Nudi Malachite was jewel-rich and complex, Nudi Jaune is simply, gloriously, unreservedly happy. It does not ask you to think.
