Nudi Ukraine

Photo Collage, Acrylic and Resin on Wood Panel | 12×12 inches | 1⅞" Deep | 2023 | Nudibranch Series

Sometimes the natural world speaks the language we need most.

Nudi Ukraine is an act of solidarity rendered in the colours that need no explanation. Blue and yellow — total, deliberate, unwavering — a chromatic statement that carries the full weight of its reference without a single word of explanation required. The background is blue. The creatures are blue and yellow. The crystals, the fungi, the coral — all drawn from the blue and yellow palette that the natural world has always possessed, long before any nation thought to claim it.

Because here is what the nudibranch knows, and the mushroom, and the crystal, and the coral — blue and yellow belong to no one. They existed in the ocean and the earth and the forest long before borders were drawn and flags were designed and wars were started. The chromodoris nudibranch has been blue and yellow for millions of years. The citrine crystal has been gold since before human beings existed to name it. The blue kyanite was blue before the first map was ever made.

And yet — here, now, in this particular moment — those colours mean something specific and urgent and human. They mean resistance. They mean persistence. They mean the refusal to be extinguished.

Nudi Ukraine brings the full chromatic arsenal of the natural world to bear in solidarity — nudibranchs of extraordinary blue and yellow moving through a world of crystals and fungi and coral, a piece of the ocean's own palette offered as witness, as testament, as the quietest possible form of resistance against the idea that beauty and life can be destroyed by the will of one man.

It cannot. The nudibranchs know this. They were here before borders were invented. They will be here after the last flag has been folded.
