Nudi Wonderland

Photo Collage, Acrylic and Resin on Wood Panel | 12×12 inches | 1⅞" Deep | 2023 | Nudibranch Series

Follow the rabbit. Follow the nudibranch. Follow whatever pulls you down into this particular wonderland — because once you're in, you won't want to come back.

Nudi Wonderland is the Nudibranch series at its most joyful, most abundant and most jaw-dropping. Against a deep black void that gives every colour its maximum possible intensity, an extraordinary cast of characters assembles — each one real, each one existing on this planet right now, each one a separate miracle that the universe apparently decided to make just because it could.

That towering green-capped mushroom rising through the centre like a beacon — real. The perfect purple-gilled fungus below it, its radial symmetry so precise it looks engineered — real. The blue and black chromodoris nudibranch sliding across the lower left, its colours so graphic and clean it looks like something a designer laboured over for weeks — real. The extraordinary red and white spotted nudibranch top right, covered in what appear to be tiny crimson beads arranged in perfect rows — real. The pink and yellow flabellina reaching its cerata skyward like a creature conducting an invisible orchestra — real. The yellow coral fungi. The fly agaric. The teal branching form bottom right that looks like it arrived from another galaxy entirely.

All of it real. All of it here. All of it on the same planet where you woke up this morning and made coffee and checked your phone.

This is what the Nudibranch series keeps insisting, painting after painting — that the natural world is so extravagantly, so recklessly, so incomprehensibly beautiful that the only rational response is wonder. Not studied appreciation. Not considered aesthetic judgment. Pure, unmediated, childlike wonder — the kind that makes you grab the person next to you and say look at this, just LOOK at this.

The artist's favourite piece in the series. Made with the full understanding that some things are too extraordinary to be explained and too beautiful to be priced — and then priced anyway, because beauty should be lived with, not locked away.

Created in a unique process combining photographic collage, hand-applied acrylic paint and a final layer of high-gloss resin, the surface has an extraordinary luminosity and depth — every creature and fungus suspended beneath the glass-like resin as though preserved in amber, frozen at the peak of their impossible perfection.
