Blue Lotus Koi is an invitation to pause.
Inspired by the quiet beauty of a lily pond, this painting explores the space between waking and dreaming—the moment when the surface of the water becomes a mirror and the world seems to fall completely still.
I conceived this painting as a window into a moment of Zen: a place to let the eye wander, the mind soften, and the outside world temporarily disappear.
The koi move beneath the floating blue lilies, creating a sense of quiet movement within an otherwise tranquil landscape. The composition is intended to carry the viewer away—to that elusive moment of meditative perfection when everything feels perfectly, beautifully still.
The blue lotus has carried an extraordinary symbolic history across cultures.
In ancient Egypt, the blue water lily (Nymphaea caerulea) appears throughout art and funerary imagery, where its daily opening and closing made it an evocative symbol of rebirth, transformation and regeneration.
Blue lotus imagery is also associated with the funerary world of King Tutankhamun, appearing among the botanical imagery of his burial objects.
The flower has a sensual history too. Ancient Egyptian imagery frequently connected the blue lotus with pleasure, beauty and altered states of consciousness. Modern research has identified naturally occurring alkaloids in Nymphaea caerulea, although the precise psychoactive effects traditionally attributed to the plant remain an area of scientific uncertainty.
For me, this history makes the blue lotus a particularly beautiful symbol for this painting: transformation through stillness.
Each Blue Lotus Koi print is produced as a museum-quality giclée fine art print on Hahnemühle 300gsm cotton rag paper.
The luxurious cotton rag surface provides exceptional depth and subtlety, allowing the luminous blues, delicate details and atmospheric quality of the original painting to translate beautifully into print.
Printed with archival pigment inks, each piece is produced to order and finished with a 1-inch white border around the artwork.
