Cynthia by the Sea
Cynthia by the Sea
Acrylic and R&F Oil Stick on Canvas | 56×48 inches | 2026 | Divine Feminine
Jersey. Sometime in the 1960s. A young woman sits on a rock by the sea and tilts her face toward the sun.
This is Cynthia — captured in a photograph before she became anyone's mother, anyone's proper English lady, anyone's memory. Just herself, on a beach, in the full radiance of a summer morning that neither she nor the photographer could have known would outlast her by decades and become, eventually, a painting.
Cynthia was the mother of the artist's closest friend. She was impeccably dressed, warmly hospitable, entirely herself in every room she entered. She died recently. This painting — built over years through layer upon layer of paint until the canvas became something closer to a geological formation than a surface — is the artist's way of saying: she was here. She was luminous. She deserves to be painted laughing.
The red swimsuit blazes against the wild blues of the sea and sky. The lighthouse stands its quiet watch. The beach ball — joyful, slightly surreal, completely right — anchors the composition with the particular cheerfulness of a day that has everything it needs.
The photograph is included because it belongs here — because the distance between that black and white image and this painting full of colour and paint and years of attention is exactly the distance between a person remembered and a person honoured.
