Pink Gloves
Pink Gloves
Acrylic on Canvas | 45×68 inches | 3" Deep | 2024 | Divine Feminine
She is life size.
This is the first thing to understand about Pink Gloves — that the figure on this canvas is exactly the size of the person who sat for it, which means that when you stand in front of this painting you are standing in front of her, at the same scale, in the same space, looking at each other across whatever distance separates the painted world from the real one. It is a different experience from looking at a figure in a painting. It is closer to being in a room with someone.
And what a room.
The artist spent years after leaving fashion photography refusing to return to the studio — the shoots, the styling, the choreography of image-making that had been her professional world for two decades and from which she needed, for a long time, complete distance. Then one day the distance was enough. The readiness returned. And with it came this — a red-haired woman invited to a Brooklyn studio, styled with the instinct of someone who has always understood how clothes and light and the arrangement of a body in space create meaning, photographed with the eye of a former fashion photographer who never actually stopped seeing the way fashion photographers see, and then painted.
The result is Pink Gloves — and it is, unmistakably, the work of someone who came back to something they loved after a long absence and found it waiting exactly where they left it, better for the time apart.
She sits on the red floor with her hands raised to her face — those pink-gloved hands cradling her jaw in a gesture of such complete, unselfconscious ease that it reads less like a pose and more like a thought caught mid-forming. Her red hair falls around her with the loose abundance of someone who stopped managing it at some point and is entirely right to have done so. Her freckled face looks out with the direct, slightly amused expression of a person who is comfortable being looked at and comfortable looking back — the ideal subject for an artist whose entire practice is built on the quality of mutual attention between painter and painted.
And the light around her.
This is where Pink Gloves moves from portrait into something else entirely. The background is not a background — it is an atmosphere, an emanation, the visible expression of the energy field that the artist perceives around every living person. She sees auras. She always has. And here, for the first time in a large-scale figurative work, she has painted what she actually sees — the pinks and fuchsias and magentas that radiate from this particular woman in this particular moment, the auric light that conventional portraiture ignores because conventional portraiture only depicts what the camera records and the camera cannot record this.
This painting can.
Pink has always been the artist's colour — not as a preference but as a frequency, the particular wavelength of love and warmth and the divine feminine energy that runs through this entire series like a thread. Here it saturates everything — the gloves, the background, the light itself — a painting that doesn't just depict a woman but depicts the energy she carries, the light she generates, the particular quality of presence that made a former fashion photographer look across a room and think — yes. Her. I need to paint her.
