Between Worlds
Between Worlds
R&F Oil Stick on Canvas | 42×48 inches | 2024
We are standing at the edge of something unprecedented.
Between Worlds gives that moment a body.
A figure crouches at the threshold — young, vital, rendered in extraordinary colour, the human form ablaze with yellow-green and deep crimson and electric blue, as though the body itself is the last source of organic light in a world beginning to pixelate. Behind him, the natural world still exists — flowers and foliage rendered in the pointillist language of living things, blue and green and orange, abundant and generous and real. Beneath him, the ground has already begun to change — flattening, digitalising, resolving into something that resembles data more than earth.
He is not falling. He is not fleeing. He is deciding.
That crouch — that particular posture of absolute readiness — could tip either way. Back into the flowering world behind him, its colours warm and various and alive. Or forward, into whatever comes next — faster, flatter, more efficient, and entirely of our own making. The painting does not tell him which way to go. It simply holds the moment of choice with unflinching honesty and asks us to recognise ourselves in it.
This is the defining tension of our time, given form and colour and paint. We are the most nature-dependent creatures that have ever existed — every breath, every bite of food, every moment of genuine joy rooted in the living world — and we are the first generation seriously contemplating leaving it behind. Not with malice. With curiosity. With the same restless intelligence that has always driven us forward, for better and for worse.
Painted in R&F Oil Sticks — pure professional grade pigment in oil wax, as direct and committed a medium as the subject demands — the surface has a raw, urgent energy entirely suited to the gravity of the theme. The colours are deliberately overwhelming — the human figure almost lost in the intensity of the world around it, or perhaps electrified by it, charged with the energy of a living system that does not yet know it is being left behind.
