Field Notes I

Pastel Écu on Arches Paper | 26×40 inches | 2024 | Nature as a Cosmos Series

Every great naturalist kept a field notebook.

Darwin sketched the finches. Humboldt recorded the rainforest. Georgia O'Keeffe pressed her face close to the desert flowers and drew what she found there. Field Notes I belongs to that tradition — an artist's direct, unmediated encounter with the living world, recorded with urgency and joy in one of the most luminous and immediate of all artistic mediums.

Pastel écu on Arches paper — the same medium and support chosen by Nicholas Party, one of the most significant artists working today — has a quality unlike any other. The pigment sits on the surface of the paper with extraordinary vibrancy, unmediated by oil or water, pure colour in direct contact with the finest paper in the world. The result is a luminosity that seems to generate its own light — colours that glow from within rather than reflecting from without.

And what colours. Purple globe thistles punctuate the composition like deep violet planets in a yellow-green universe, their precise spherical forms a beautiful counterpoint to the loose, energetic marks of the surrounding meadow. Rudbeckia blazes in gold and black. Red blooms burn like signal fires. The whole surface hums and vibrates with the particular frequency of a summer meadow at the height of its power — observed closely, recorded honestly, rendered with the full force of an artist completely at home in the natural world.

Part of the Nature as a Cosmos series and the first in a new body of work on paper, Field Notes I represents something intimate and immediate — the artist's notebook made large, the private observation made public, the fleeting moment of encounter with the living world made permanent.
