The red poppy. Papaver rhoeas. Growing wild in the fields of Flanders where so many young men from the far corners of the earth fell in the First World War — New Zealanders among them, boys from farms and harbours and small towns at the bottom of the world who never came home. The poppy grew over their graves. It grew through the churned earth of the battlefields.
